My son was having some difficulty in school – both socially and academically, so I took him to his Pediatrician for a recommendation on what to do. When I told the Pediatrician about my son’s history, she told me to go to the school for help since we were uninsured. The school was bankrupt and didn’t want to help since my son was not disruptive in class. So I went back to the Pediatrician who got me in to see a specialist. After being evaluated, the specialist suspected my son had Asperger’s Syndrome and “unofficially” diagnosed him with the syndrome. He gave me plenty of pamphlets and resources for me to seek out information on my own, but told me he did not want to “officially” diagnose him since we were uninsured and wouldn’t be able to get insurance in the future with that diagnosis. The doctor did give me a letter to give to my son’s school so he could get some help if he needed it. It is now 2 years later and I still work with my son at home to overcome his “quirks” based on the info. the doctor gave us. He is succeeding in school; however, I have been doing all the work on my own, without medical or professional help. I wonder how many other families have not received the quality of care they deserved for simply not being able to afford health insurance. And what’s worse is that this involves a child. He didn’t ask for any of this….and as he gets older, what if the symptoms get worse? I still can’t afford health insurance. And furthermore, our state has a state-funded program besides medicaid for the uninsured; however, we are $250 over income. We are one of the millions of families that fall between the cracks. I am exhausted and frustrated! Something needs to change and it needs to change now!

To make this very brief, my problem with health care is that every time I need to go to the eye doctor or anything like that, I have to “wait until my insurance will cover it.” I don’t really understand this very well, but I do know that I had to go almost a year without glasses that I badly needed because I couldn’t get my eyes examined. Since then, my eyes have also gotten worse and every time I have to wait longer to go they will keep getting worse.
