State:: California

Occupation:: Customer Service Supervisor

I currently have private health insurance with a health care company who I have been employed by for 10+ yrs. After two years of appeals and negotiations my insurance finally agreed to approve a neck fusion. Not only did they take so long to make a decision they also denied claims submitted by my specialist for authorized services ( I appealed this as well). I have been in a great deal of pain and also have had numbness and tingling just waiting for approval of my surgery. The surgery was finally approved during the holidays but unfortunately MD was not able to perform the surgery until the new year and they also mentioned to me since the insurance took so long I needed a new MRI (more money out of pocket). I also have a huge deductible that I pay out of pocket, that MD’s office said I would also have to pay this up front before the surgery. When I called to schedule the MRI and my surgery I was informed by my MD’s office that I have been in care with for 12+ years that they were no longer contracted with my employer/Insurance and I would need to find a new provider. This is devastating to me and so unfair! To think of all the time, effort and money I have spent to have to start all over. I pay for my insurance! Where are my rights!? Who cares about my health? Please help!

Occupation:: Student/Employee

I work retail and go to school as well, I found out after being hired that because I was short of being considered full time (5 hours at most), I could not get full time employee benefits which included health care coverage. My job also did not make this apparent to me when they hired me, even with me asking questions regarding this topic. Since then I have had an emergency room visit, (which I have to pay out of pocket) and because of my anger of the situation refuse to pay it. It’s been about 2 years now.

State:: California
Occupation:: Richard Gicomeng, Founder of Drug Use Education (DUE) Process Initiative (www.DrugUseEducation.org)

Diagnosed in 1979 at the age of 19 with narcolepsy and what today is known as ADHD, I was treated with Desoxyn and my 2.0 GPA doubled overnight… I went from Secondary Ed major to Communications to Aerospace Engineer… Working for NASA… In 2002, I moved to California and because Desoxyn is Methamphetamine HCI, a physician accused me of “SPEED ABUSE”, as I was to discover 18 months later when my inability to get treatment for narcolepsy/ADHD had forced me to apply for SSDI. Once on Medicare, I was able to find a physician to treat me. I went back to work but my treatment stopped and a sleep attack during a meeting put my job in jeopardy and I was let go.

Recently, I spent six months waiting for a clinic to treat me. But they didn’t. They billed Medicare but never provided treatment or testing. During the course of 6 months, I was incorrectly diagnosed with schizophrenia and the treatment they provided resulted in serious anxiety. Doctors I have never seen send me bills and bill Medicare. This is not the way it used to be.

If we want decent healthcare for the next generations, we need to provide the younger generation with medical and pharmacological training in grades K12 and have individuals citizens take a greater share in their healthcare treatment. We need to revolutionize drug policy, replacing the fear, ignorance, and shame with knowledge discipline, and trust, expanding medicinal use of drugs and reducing the social use, limiting abuse potential. The more medical education that the public has, the more effective providers will become in research and advancing medicine.

Absolutely disgusting that I can’t get insurance for cheaper than $320 per month.

About my general Health:

I am a 27 year old female. 5’2″, 105 pounds. I have never smoked in my entire life, never had an alcoholic beverage. I only drink water and lots of it. In short, I am a health nut. I have been to the doctor 3 times in the last 8 years for routine exams.

I haven’t eaten fast food in 10 years. I am a runner and athlete, and have never had a heath problem until last year. I fell from an indoor rock climbing maze when the person holding my rope let it slip. Now I have a small pain in my lower back that showed up every 3 months. After an MRI at the request of my Dr. they found a slightly herniated L4 disc. No biggie. I have been doing exercises and haven’t had pain in a year.

I have been unable to get approved for health insurance that is under $320 per month. I am a full time law student, building law school debts and am struggling to pay for rent, food, utilities, books and tuition.

I find it is absolutely disgusting that someone as healthy as myself is unable to be insured at a reasonable rate because of a small condition that hasn’t caused pain in 3 years.

I am currently uninsured because of this.

I had never thought I would be the victim of the same health system I work in as a pharmacist. My first pregnancy was lost mid-term and I was told that my next pregnancy would be treated as a high-risk one. Sure enough, one year later, I was at the high risk OB/GYN MD’s office asking him to take preventive action. Of course, my husband and I were dismissed as though we were some stupid people with no intelligence. Four and a half months went by with repeated pleas from our side and a mute doctor on the other end. We couldn’t change doctors (only 2 high risk MDs at the facility and a bad experience with the 1st one already) or insurance – middle of the pregnancy and the year. And then, I visited the ER on a Friday night. Even after reading my previous history and increased abdominal pressure, the regular OB/GYN MD I saw that night, didn’t seem it fit enough to admit me or call my high risk MD. It was after-hours and then a long weekend – he couldn’t be called – C’mon, my insurance was going to pay him. Well, I was sent home and two days later, I had a miscarriage on a Sunday. Again no MD, the on-call MD and the nurses at the L&D unit thought I was fooling around with my contractions….Why can’t we in the USA have a free access to the doctors and the medical care – insurance or no insurance?? Why doesn’t the health system realize that diseases don’t wait for weekdays – anything can happen anytime?? Why doesn’t the system realize that ER is overburdened during after hours and weekend/holidays and that regular/specialist doctors should be available readily at all times?

I am a self employed taxi driver in San Diego Cal and have been paying Kaiser Permanente $568.00 Per month. This was alot for me to pay and took all my disposable income. Each year they raise my health care costs by about $50 per month but a few days ago i got a notice in the mail that my new costs would be $746 per month, and increase of $178 per month. Because i am on a cooversion plan I have no other viable choices and because i have pre-existing conditions.
So now I will loose my health care which is practically a death sentence. Why can’t individuals in my situation have the ability to buy into a group health plan a pay a group health rate.

As a healthcare provider of mental health services, I have decided to no longer accept insurance. Even though billing is easy with online methods, I found that payment was often delayed. With PPO’s, the rate reimbursed often changed month by month making more paperwork and extra billing for me. I was unable to charge a stable co-payment. I had to often re-bill clients for what was missing or what changed. I had to spend time explaining to the client that their insurance could randomly change the amount they pay, and that the client or I do not say. This random changing happens a lot. As well, clients had a hard time understanding that even though the insurance plan said that they cover, for example, 50% of cost that did not mean 50% of what I billed. It was 50% of what they deem reasonable. What most HMO’s and PPO’s find reasonable is 60% less than my fee. It is the same rate they deemed reasonable in 1990. That means that mental health providers should not have gotten a raise in 18 years. With PPO, I naturally can collect the rest of the outstanding bill from the client. But the client often has to be responsible for 75% of the cost. If I were to be on any HMO’s I would have to accept the fact that my work is so devalued, I would not be granted a raise ever. The best thing I have ever done for myself professionally was to decide not to take insurances. Now, I just give people a receipt and they can deal with the insurance company. Sure, I have fewer clients but I now get what I ask for in reimbursement and feel better about myself. I no longer feel devalued and abused by the system.
Sincerely,
ESC

I was suffering from chronic back pain following an accident from several years before. As my pain continued to worsen, I began to seek aggressive medical treatment options. Finally an orthopedic surgeon recommended a 2-level Total Disc Replacement (TDR) to alleviate my pain. I was quite relieved knowing that the end of my back pain was within sight. Then to my complete astonishment, just 4 days prior to my surgery date, my health insurance agent informed him that they would not cover the cost of the surgery because they saw it as experimental in nature.

I immediately contacted the hospital to see how much his procedure would cost in total. I was told that without insurance, this procedure would cost over $100,000. This news was devastating to me, as I did not know how or where I could come up with this kind of money in a short period of time. Faced with such incomprehensible anguish, I decided to proceed with the operation in 4 days and then immediately file for bankruptcy protection. This worst-case scenario would at least alleviate my physical pain and then I would deal with the financial ramifications later.

After a few hours of considering this option,I decided that there had to be a better and more responsible option. I then turned to the Internet to search for possible answers. This is where I learned the idea of obtaining my surgical procedure outside the U.S. by a highly qualified surgeon at a highly reputable hospital at a fraction of the cost in the U.S. It’s called medical tourism. This appeared to be a possible solution to my suffering.

It’s too bad I had to travel outside of the U.S. to receive my procedure.

I am now doing fine and have eliminated my pain…no thanks to the U.S. healthcare system.

I have HealthNet HMO through my company and it has been very painful getting medical help with this insurance policy. During the sign-up I was assured by sales people that there would not be any problem with HMO. But when I actually needed medical attention I learned that the doctor whose name printed on my insurance card would not accept new patients – especially HMO patients! It took me five (5) weeks to finally find a primary care physician (PCP) to take me. Also, I had to wait for over 4 weeks to get my first appointment (new patient). I was not aware that the PCPs often require that their new patients to make the ‘new patient appointment’ even when the patient needs no medical attention. So, basically under this insurance plan, the new patients are required to spend the money even when they don’t need medical help. On top of the difficulty of getting to see a doctor under HealthNet HMO, the customer service at HealthNet was painfully unprofessional, rude, and intensely bureaucratic. Also HMO patients have been systematically treated by both the doctor office and the insurance company without respect: HMO patients are made to feel like they are some kind of sub-human lining up to get handouts. They seem to make the patients feel very undignifying to carry HMO plan. This is one of many problems in the health care system in the US today.
